Deafening Silence: The 2012 Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity

You may have heard that “silence is golden.”  In our day where communication is constant—if not verbally, then through Facebook, text, or Twitter—silence is an increasingly rare commodity.  That scarcity makes it more noticeable than just another slogan jingled on television, ironed on a t-shirt, or posted on a webpage.  Silence, in our world, is odd and uncomfortable; it isolates us from our daily routine and the gadgets and distractions that pervade it and forces us to sit down and think.  In that sense, perhaps the most accurate adage for our age is that “silence speaks volumes.”

Bryan Kemper, founder of the Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity, realized this truth in 2004 when God inspired him to answer the familiar question:  “What can I do to help end abortion?”  Working in the basement of his home with a computer and a small e-mail list, Bryan set out to galvanize pro-life students to work in solidarity with each other and the over 4,000 children who are killed by abortion each and every day.  God blessed Bryan’s efforts and the Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity was born.

Just last year students at 2,252 schools in 56 countries participated in the event by wearing a piece of red tape displaying the word “LIFE” over their mouths or on taped bands around their arms.  With their teachers’ permission, these students remain silent throughout the day in solidarity with the 46 million children who have been killed since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973—serving as their “voice” to the world.  These students hand out flyers to educate their friends about the true nature of abortion and the millions of pre-born children it has killed.  And in so doing God has enabled them to touch the hearts of hundreds of pregnant women each year, saving countless lives.

This year’s Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity is scheduled for Tuesday, October 16, 2012 and you can take part.  Alliance Defending Freedom supports this important movement by providing students with information about their First Amendment rights and working to ensure they are able to participate in the event free from unconstitutional restraints.  We have prepared a letter for you to share with school officials who have questions about the event and are here to defend your right to exercise religious freedom at school.  If you experience any difficulty promoting or participating in the event, please contact us at 1-800-835-5233, on our website at, or at
