Ministry Builds on Opportunities to Defend Religious Freedom In America by Standing with Allies in Europe

Many of you are aware of the growing influence God is giving Alliance Defending Freedom in the courts of Europe. I have often expressed how important our presence there is to defend crucial cases that, if lost, will undoubtedly be embraced by activist judges in the U.S. and used to set ominous precedents for our own legal system. In short order, those precedents could seriously undermine your constitutionally protected freedoms and erode your religious liberty.

The last few weeks have offered our attorneys some unprecedented opportunities in the European courts. Senior Counsel Daniel Lipsic, who works out of our Vienna office, was able to attend a Grand Chamber hearing of a critical case involving same-sex adoptions, held in Strasbourg, France, at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) – the “Supreme Court” of Europe. Alliance Defending Freedom intervened as a third party in the case, and opposing counsel spent a great deal of his time trying to deal with the arguments presented by Daniel and another of our Vienna legal team, Paul Coleman, in their brief.

Daniel was also invited to address the European Parliament earlier this month on the growing intolerance toward Christians across the continent. His speech was exceedingly well received, and our team was able to distribute among those attending an 80-page handout documenting examples of our extensive legal work before the ECHR.

Paul was able to lead another Alliance Defending Freedom event in Warsaw, Poland, at the annual Human Dimension Implementation meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe – an important gathering for those committed to human rights, civil liberties, and religious freedom.

And two weeks ago, in Strasbourg, Daniel was able to join with Andrea Williams of Christian Concern For Our Nation in presenting evidence at a Council of Europe hearing on freedom of Christian conscience and the marginalization of Christian beliefs in the European legal culture.

All of these presentations enable our Alliance Defending Freedom team to underscore for ever-widening audiences and influential legislators and jurists the dangers posed to religious freedom in Europe today. Coupled with the extraordinary successes God has given us in defending important cases at the ECHR, these opportunities are positioning the ministry to make a strong, enduring impact on the European legal system – and that can have very positive repercussions for our continuing efforts to defend you and your family here in the U.S.

Please pray for this critical aspect of our work, that God will bless your prayers and generous support and strengthen all our efforts to preserve your religious freedoms at home and abroad.
